Sea Salt is obtained naturally from sea water through evaporation. The water is collected in large ponds where it is allowed to evaporate, and the salt is left behind in layers. The cleaner and whiter salt will usually appear on the top, while the more colorful and mineral rich salt will appear in the bottom layers.
Sea salt is often refined so that it resembles table salt, and contains similar ingredients as well. But you can also purchase unrefined sea salt which comes in different colors, depending on where it was harvested. Some locations will produce a pinkish color, while others produce different shades of gray, or a sandy color.
What Does Sea Salt Contain
Sea salt contains about 98% sodium and chloride and about 2% essential trace minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, sulfur and iodine. Sea salt can contain up to over 80 trace minerals. Although these minerals are essential to your health, they are not readily absorbed into your body, as it is designed to obtain minerals from plants. Thus you can use sea salt in your water to water your garden to ensure that your produce will be rich with those minerals.
Unrefined sea salt does not contain any anti-caking ingredients, added sugars, added iodine, or any other unnatural ingredients which are foreign to the body.
Refined sea salt will contain less essential trace minerals, and can contain anti-caking agents to keep the salt free-running. Anti-caking agents contain aluminum, which contributes to a bitter taste, and thus sugar is added to off-set the bitterness. Refined sea salt can also contain added iodine, which is said to help with brain and other bodily functions.
How Much Salt Do You Need
The recommended daily intake is only between 1500 to 2400 mg. You can obtain this from 1 tsp. or less, as it contains as much as 2400 mg of sodium.
